Greatest Hits! A Roadkill Opera Movie<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;is a mashup of a backstage, screwball comedy set in 1988 Wyoming with music from Ferdinando Paer&#8217;s 1804 opera <strong><em>Leonora<\/em><\/strong>. It tells the true story of the the hour before the lights go up on the first professional gig for an amateur sketch comedy improv troupe&#8211;the <strong>Roadkill on a Stick Frozen Foods Theatre Company<\/strong>&#8211;at the legendary <strong>Silver Dollar Bar<\/strong> in the <strong>Wort Hotel <\/strong>in Jackson Hole. During that hour, they find out their showroom will be torn down after their run. Hilarity ensues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This movie is essentially a demo to encourage live performances of music from Ferdinando Paer&#8217;s 1804 opera <strong><em>Leonora<\/em><\/strong>. The deluxe full-color interior takes the reader on a ride from 50-below-zero temperatures in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to Chicago, Vienna, Minneapolis, London, Washington DC, Nashville, Gaithersburg, Los Angeles, and ultimately, back to Chicago for the North American premiere of <strong><em>Leonora<\/em><\/strong> in 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Hungry Men Don&#8217;t Swerve<\/em><\/strong> also includes the lyrics to Dave Rohrer&#8217;s song <strong>Jackson Hole<\/strong> and the script for the improv comedy sketch <strong>Cod Piece Dining Room<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The movie has mostly live performances where the LP has mostly studio performances. The movie also has additional documentary information about the comedy troupe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Roadkill!!! Greatest Hits! A Roadkill Opera Movie<\/em><\/strong> had its premiere screened before a live audience on June 3, 2025, at <strong>Cult Classic Brewing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>73 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>English, with English supertitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212; The Score&#8217;s Backstory &#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a 1798 two-act comic opera, <em><strong>Leonora, ou L\u2019Amour conjugal<\/strong><\/em>. It had a French libretto by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly, with the action set in sixteenth-century Spain\u2014what is referred to in the opera world as an escape drama. The Bouilly libretto was set to music by Pierre Gaveaux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marie Therese, grand-daughter of Empress Maria Theresa, grew up in musical Milan and, when she wed her Austrian cousin and herself became Empress of Austria, brought her passion for music with her. She loved music; made copies, swapped copies, played, sang, and produced public concerts two or three times a year; and, three to ten times a <em>month<\/em> she would stage private concerts for her own amusement, amassing an ensemble of 12 to 16 musicians and singers to play for two or three hours. In her private concerts, Marie Therese would sing. And she would tell anyone who would listen that her favorite libretto of all time was Bouilly\u2019s <em><strong>Leonora<\/strong><\/em>, and she wished <em>someone<\/em> would set it to new music for her. Ferdinando Paer, the Parma-born music director at the K\u00e4rntnertortheater in Vienna and a regular performer in Marie Therese\u2019s private concerts, moved to another court in Dresden while Austria was at war with Napoleon. It was in Dresden that Paer finished his <em><strong>Leonora<\/strong><\/em> for the Empress in 1804. The overture and first act of Paer\u2019s <em><strong>Leonora<\/strong><\/em> are the musical basis for <em><strong>A Roadkill Opera<\/strong><\/em>. After Napoleon defeated the Austrians, Paer moved to Paris where he eventually headed up the Op\u00e9ra-Italien, to be succeeded by Rossini. When Paer died in 1839, his <em><strong>Leonora<\/strong><\/em> was forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forgotten, that is, until another musical denizen, intrigued by Beethoven\u2019s high praise for Paer\u2019s music, recovered Paer\u2019s <em><strong>Leonora<\/strong><\/em>. Peter Maag found Paer\u2019s <em><strong>Leonora<\/strong><\/em> while artistic director of the Teatro Regio di Parma in Paer\u2019s home town. Maag was so taken with it that he mounted a radio production in 1976 and followed up with a 3-disc boxed set on London Records in 1978. After 140 years of neglect, Paer\u2019s <em><strong>Leonora<\/strong><\/em> was back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Praise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-gray-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f41ff0d4bd37a84e2eef366d1d355ebd\"><span style=\"white-space: normal; color: rgb(85, 85, 85);\">&#8220;While there had been some interest in Leonora in the 1970s &#8211; and even a heavily cut recording with a starry cast &#8211; we have only recently been able to get a clear picture of the opera Paer wrote. The first critical edition of Leonora was prepared for performances in Austria in 2020, and a recording of those concert performances was issued shortly thereafter.&nbsp;<strong>When I heard this new recording, I was blown away. Based (loosely) on a true story from a fast-developing tourist&nbsp;town, this original English libretto by Parker is set to music by&nbsp;Ferdinando Paer (a direct competitor of Beethoven and Napoleon\u2019s ma\u00eetre de chapelle).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2012 <b><i>A Roadkill Opera<\/i><\/b> was workshopped in&nbsp;Crystal City, Virginia,&nbsp;by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.operabase.com\/jeffrey-sean-dokken-a2132944\/performances\/past\/en\">Jeffrey Dokken<\/a>&nbsp;at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artomatic.org\"><b>Artomatic<\/b><\/a>, the Washington DC area&#8217;s largest free creative arts event.&nbsp;Dokken, currently the music director for the National Football League&#8217;s Washington Commanders, served as music director and conductor of the <b>Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia<\/b> from 2010 to 2023. Maestro Dokken reassembled most of the 2012 workshop&#8217;s chamber orchestra and singers in 2013 for a series of recording sessions in Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cast for the studio opera recording includes Laura Wehrmeyer (Holly),&nbsp;soprano; Andrew Webster (Eddie), baritone; David Timpane (Stephan),&nbsp;baritone; Krista Monique McClellan (Debby), soprano; and Jeffrey Dokken&nbsp;(Dave), tenor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The chamber orchestra for the opera recording includes Martine Micozzi, flute; Jeannine Altavilla, clarinet; Sarah Robinson, bassoon; Michael Thompson, trumpet; Jeffrey Dokken, timpani; Frank Peracchia, violin I; Ian Ross, violin II; Val Rauch, viola; Kathy Augustine and Natalie Spehar, cello; and Stephan Alexander Parker on hammer, 2&#215;4, and cymbal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b><i>A Roadkill Opera<\/i><\/b> was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Blue House Productions by Jeff Gruber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cast for the live improv\/comedy recording <b><i>Roadkill!!! He was a regular participant in the thrice-monthly private concerts put on by (and for the personal amusement of) Marie Therese at the royal court of Vienna, Austria. The Empress would assemble talented amateur and professional singers and musicians (similar in size and make-up to the group that recorded <b><i>A Roadkill Opera<\/i><\/b>) to play mixed concerts of sacred and secular music from her vast collection of scores and parts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paer wrote dozens of operas. <b><i>Leonora<\/i><\/b>, the first act from which the score for <b><i>A Roadkill Opera<\/i><\/b> was derived, was his 40th opera.
